"basic skills" – Targeting the right career
The situation regarding apprenticeships in Germany remains tense. To get an apprenticeship, many of the yearly approx.
600,000 school graduates write applications on mass. 50 or more applications, and accordingly many grueling suitability
tests and assessments are no rarity. Youngsters invest time, money and nerves and still receive refusals.
Parents are worried and the youngsters are frustrated. The same is true for training officers, personnel managers
and independent master craftsmen. On their tables the number of unqualified applications pile up. They invest time
and effort in their selection processes but still the apprenticeship places remain unoccupied.
The association "Basic Skills Deutschland e.V." wants, with the help of an
enterprise and career suitability test of the same name, to change this. "basic skills" was
developed over a number of years by training experts from the region Braunschweig. After disappointing experiences with a
competition product, the developers of "basic skills" decided on the
i-qbox Human Performance Suite as their LMS platform. "In comparison to our first
realization approach we no longer drive a stubborn Trabbi, but with
the i-qbox Human Performance Suite
a Mercedes!" states Reinhard Niewerth, second Chairperson of the association.
"basic skills" makes academically secured statements about
the abilities of applicants in the five fields of German, English,
mathematics, visual abilities and, processes and workflows.
The knowledge of and skills in these five fields are of fundamental
importance in determining the suitability of almost all job
careers.
Hence, they can be found in almost all business suitability
tests. However, in contrast to many other on-line ability tests
"basic skills" guarantees controlled test conditions. It verifies
the identity of the participant, and the test is undertaken
under the supervision of certificated test leaders in test centers.
Immediately after their testing, participants can print out
their results "my basic skills" and compare these
to career profiles found on the association's internet site
(www.basic-skills.eu).
According to Thomas Hartmann, Chairperson of BASIC Skills Germany
inc., "the test helps youngster to recognize their personal
abilities and focus their application efforts. It also relieves
the enterprises. Due to the controlled test conditions, the
results have at least the same informative value as the usual
suitability tests enterprises carry out in their first candidate
selection step. With the "my basic skills" results, enterprises
can, with good conscience, skip their first selection step."

Paper – still a reliable testing option
Today, with the widespread availability of computers and the internet, everything is being done online.
Even tests. But what if a potential or existing registrant has no computer or internet connection?
Are they to be ignored? Or what if the internet connection at a test center unexpectedly fails at a
crucial testing time? Are the participants to be dismissed and sent home? Surely not, the cost of
rescheduling could be enormous.
To help overcome these eventualities, the i-qbox
Human Performance Suite has been equipped with a
“test-conversion” function. With this function, a test which
contains single or multiple choice questions can be converted
into a PDF document. The PDF is generated using the same i-qbox
parameter settings as the online test. For example, if it is
defined that the online test should randomly take four questions
out of a pool of ten, then the PDF test will do the same.
This ensures that the PDF looks identical to its online counterpart.
Only difference being that questions, which include elements
such as hotspots or animations, are excluded as these cannot
be correctly presented on paper. A respective answer sheet can
be generated too. Both the PDF test and answer sheet can immediately
be printed out and circulated for testing purposes. Thus, even
though they are over hundreds of years old and perhaps old fashioned,
paper tests are still irreplaceable in ensuring a reliable testing
solution is at hand at all times.
