Newsletter February 2007

This year's e-Learning exhibition Learntec in Karlsruhe was very successful for Comartis once again.

Learntec 2006One of the highlights was the workshop "Quality Management within the Further Education Process", carried out by Omar Lahyani, CEO of Comartis , Torsten Maier, head of the technical/sales and bank application education at Raiffeisen Schweiz, and Frank Schirmer, managing director of Learnvision.

Torsten Maier from Raiffeisen Schweiz represented the user perspective. He demonstrated the practical implementation of education controlling and underlined the fact that good management of education must be given the same importance as other relevant business processes.
Frank Schirmer from Learnvision supports international companies in improving their return on investment in the education process. Schirmer revealed how education and business goals can be defined and how the activities performed can be usefully measured.
Omar Lahyani from Comartis showed with which of the i-qBox e-Learning solution modules education controlling can be comprehensively implemented and automated in large companies.

What was the goal of this workshop?
The workshop alerted participants to important elements of quality management in further education processes. In addition, parallels between marketing and education were addressed. The marketing processes of large companies have been very systematic for a long time: precise plans are developed outlining how campaigns should proceed, target groups are defined, measures are developed and business goals marked out. Subsequently, the selected measures are carefully examined to decide whether they were successful or not. In the education sector, it is still the case, even in large companies, that education is not directly connected to and evaluated in terms of business goals. In 2005, for example, US companies spent 13.1 billion dollars on education tools and services but only 8 percent of these companies measured the return on investment of their education processes... Our goal is to professionalize education processes and harmonize them with business goals such as has been the case in marketing for years.

Who took part in your workshop?
The participants were representatives from leading businesses in the automotive, the insurance and the consulting industries as well as representatives from the schooling and the public administration sectors.

What were the highlights of the workshop?
Discussions surrounding the following questions were particularly interesting:

  • Which elements do you expect from holistic education controlling?
  • How can quality management be harmonized with business processes?
  • What hurdles must be expected when introducing QM measures in further education?

We discussed the consequences of various measures for companies. The participants became very involved and active in the workshop.

What was the bottom line of the discussion?
Companies invest large amounts into their education budget. They are trying increasingly harder to qualify their own staff for work routines through internal further education or e-Learning. With this they aim to guarantee added value to education processes. The question companies need to ask themselves is how to harmonize education processes and business goals while at the same time ensuring that the further education quality is optimally controlled and sustained.
The basis for success is the careful definition of measurable business goals for further education activities, incorporated with a comprehensive, automated evaluation solution.

Self Assessment

i-qBox:Now, so-called self assessments can be carried out with i-qBox. Users can assess their abilities in various areas and then crosscheck with the corresponding test questions. For this purpose, the i-qBox e-Testing module was further extended:

  • Introduction of question types for self assessments (Likert scale, single choice).
  • These questions types are applicable for tests and can be intermingled with test questions.
  • The evaluations compare self assessments and test results per topic.
  • Users can print the results of their self assessments.

Self assessments can, for example, be used for practicing and self evaluation purposes or to assess expertise.

Alfred-Müller Allmig

Alfred Müller Allmig

Since 1987, Alfred-Müller AG has been running the composting plant Allmig in Baar. This state-of-the-art, computer-controlled plant produces high-quality compost for agriculture and various earth substrates for horticulture from the green waste of the eleven municipalities in Zug and many regional businesses. A block heating and generating plant generates electricity from the gas which is created through digestion of green waste. This electricity is then utilized to operate the entire plant. Even the warmth produced during power generation is not wasted: it is used to optimize the digestion process.

Up until now, the composting plant was represented as a sub-page on the corporate website of Alfred-Müller AG. Now, Comartis was asked to create a new website for Allmig in accordance with existing CI/CD print brochures.
